Navigate B-Roll Metadata in Your NLE with Eddie

Eddie auto-organizes B-roll by shot type and category for easy search and editing in Premiere, FCP, and Resolve. If there is speech in your b-roll, Eddie will summarize it too and add a note/marker.

This guide provides an overview of how Eddie organizes B-roll and how the metadata appears in Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve.

Eddie simplifies your workflow by organizing and logging B-roll efficiently before importing it into your Non-Linear Editing (NLE) software.

B-roll with Audio

Eddie summarizes any speech in that b-roll and adds it as a note/marker. (If a B-roll file has no speech or the audio isn’t clear enough, no summary will be added.)

First things first, import your b-rolls to Eddie: Learn how

Learn how to bring in your B-rolls into Eddie and how to export back to your NLE: see this article.

After you've exported from Eddie back to your NLE, see the below on where the metadata lives:

Adobe Premiere Pro: Organized XML Structure

In Premiere Pro, Eddie’s XML provides a clearly structured organization for your B-roll:

Organized XML structure
  • Main Bin: {Project Name} - B-Rolls

    • All_B-roll_Sequence: A sequence containing all B-rolls laid out in chronological order.

    • Sub-Bin: All B-Rolls

      • Contains all imported B-rolls with their shortened descriptor (file name visible in Premiere).

    • Sub-Bins for Shot Types:

      • MS (Medium Shot)

      • CU (Close-Up)

      • Wide

    • Sub-Bins for Categories:

      • Category 1: Includes clips and a sequence of all clips in this category.

      • Category 2: Includes clips and a sequence of all clips in this category.

      • Category 3: Includes clips and a sequence of all clips in this category.

      Main Bin
  • Clip Metadata: Each clip includes an AI-generated description as a marker spanning the clip length and added to the XML’s description tag.

Clip metadata

  • Search Capability: Use Adobe’s search feature to find specific B-roll clips by keywords or descriptions, making it easy to locate the exact shots you need.

Search with marker

  • Audio Summaries for B-roll with Speech – The summary appears in the Log Note column for the clip. Note: If a B-roll file has no speech or the audio isn’t clear enough, no summary will be added.

Final Cut Pro: Keyword-Based Organization

Final Cut Pro doesn’t use bins but organizes clips through keywords. When you import the FCPXML generated by Eddie:

FCP: Keyword-based organization
  • Event Structure:

    • All B-rolls are placed within a single event.

    • Categories and shot types are assigned as keywords, allowing quick filtering in the browser sidebar.

      • Example: Clicking "Wide Shot" instantly displays all wide-angle clips.

        Event structure
  • Sequences:

    • Eddie creates sequences for "All B-rolls" and for each category, making it easy to locate and review your footage.

  • Clip Metadata:

    • Each clip includes a description marker and visible shortened descriptor.

  • Search Capability: Adobe's keyword tagging allows you to search for specific shots directly within Final Cut Pro’s keyword browser.

  • Audio Summaries for B-roll with Speech – A single-frame marker is added at the first frame of the clip, with the summary in the note. Note: If a B-roll file has no speech or the audio isn’t clear enough, no summary will be added.

DaVinci Resolve: Hierarchical Bins and Metadata

DaVinci Resolve seamlessly integrates Eddie’s XML structure, providing a hierarchical organization:

  • Bin Structure:

    • {Project Name} - B-Rolls (Main Bin)

      • Sub-Bin: All B-Rolls

        • Contains all clips with visible shortened descriptors.

      • Sub-Bins for Shot Types:

        • MS (Medium Shot)

        • CU (Close-Up)

        • Wide

      • Sub-Bins for Categories:

        • Category 1: Includes all clips in this category.

        • Category 2: Includes all clips in this category.

        • Category 3: Includes all clips in this category.

        Bin structure
  • Metadata and Markers:

    • Each clip contains an AI-generated description marker, visible throughout its duration in the timeline.

Metadata

  • Audio Summaries for B-roll with Speech – The summary is included directly in the marker description on the clip. Note: If a B-roll file has no speech or the audio isn’t clear enough, no summary will be added.

Audio Summaries for B-roll with Speech

When speech is detected in a B-roll clip, Eddie generates a short summary to help you quickly understand the content.

Where you’ll find the summary in each NLE:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro – The summary appears in the Log Note column for the clip.

  • Final Cut Pro – A single-frame marker is added at the first frame of the clip, with the summary in the note.

  • DaVinci Resolve – The summary is included directly in the marker description on the clip.

If a B-roll file has no speech or the audio isn’t clear enough, no summary will be added.

Why Use Eddie for B-Roll?
