Understanding Eddie's Limitations in Editing Short-Form, B-Roll, and Event-Style Content

Eddie is a powerful tool designed for specific editing workflows, particularly those involving speech-based, long-form footage. However, it has certain limitations when it comes to handling short-form, B-roll, and event-style content. Below, we outline these limitations to help you determine if Eddie is the right tool for your editing needs.

Eddie has a minimum amount of speech needed to all a video to be imported. Eddie is specifically designed for speech-based, long-form footage, making it ideal for workflows involving multicam and multiple interview setups.

Limitations with B-Roll Placement

Eddie does not place B-roll on short reels. Instead, it integrates B-roll within longer rough-cut stories that it generates from speech-based footage. This makes it unsuitable for workflows that require B-roll placement in short-form content.

If you have a lot of short videos, the workaround is place them on a timeline in Premiere, Resolve, FCP. This workaround is necessary because Eddie is not designed to handle short-form content effectively, as it requires a minimum of 5 minutes of total footage to function.

Limitations with Event-Style Aftermovies

Eddie is not suitable for compiling non-speech, event-style aftermovies from many short clips, such as festival aftermovies. Its design and functionality are tailored for speech-based, long-form footage rather than non-speech or event-style editing.

A project needs at least 5 mins of video. This requirement ensures that Eddie can generate coherent stories from speech-based footage, which is its primary design focus.

Conclusion

While Eddie is a robust tool for specific editing workflows, it is important to understand its limitations. It is best suited for speech-based, long-form footage and is not ideal for short-form, B-roll-focused, or event-style content. For these types of projects, alternative tools may be more appropriate.

Then import that timeline into a compatible mode in Eddie. (Not all modes support timeline import.) Eddie's functionality is tailored for creating rough cuts from long-form, speech-based footage, making it less suitable for short-form, B-roll-focused, or event-style content.

Here are the specs for importing timelines.
